Firefox Extensions I Use
I use a ton of extensions on Firefox and I thought it might be neat to make a page talking about all the different ones I use and recommend for people looking to switch to Firefox or people who've had Firefox for a while and want to customize it. I'm going to separate it into ad blocker/privacy related extensions and then all my other ones just for simplicity's sake. Hope these are helpful/interesting!
Firefox Ad-Blockers & Privacy Extensions:
Now you may look at the list below and say, "Megs, that is so many anti-tracking and adblocking extensions! Why do you need that many? Don't they cancel each other out at a certain point?" and the answer is you probably don't need this many and they probably do end up cancelling each other out in the end. However, I never see any ads when I'm using Firefox now and it is such a wonderful existance that I don't want to risk losing that experience, so I refuse to delete any of these in case that will allow any ads or trackers to slip through. These are not in any order of helpfulness because I genuinely don't know which extensions are blocking what, so feel free to pick and choose based on vibes or reviews or do it the way I do and load them all on there!
- uBlock Origin! According to its page it's a "wide-spectrum content blocker with CPU and memory efficiency" which basically means if you want it blocked, Ublocker probably blocks it. It's also one of the few adblockers that has (so far) been able to consistantly block YouTube ads so! Definitely a recommended extension.
- Ghostery! This is an ad-blocker, a tracker blocker, *and* it removes cookie popups! Plus it has a fun window to show you everything it's blocking on the site you're on, and it's super easy to pause should you need/want to do so!
- Privacy Badger! This is mostly a basic blocker of invisible trackers, but it's still a nice thing to have! It's also one of the most recommended privacy extensions when you're starting out with Firefox so you may have heard of it already.
- Disconnect! It's another tracker blocker meant to speed up your browser.
- Adblocker Ultimate! Another adblocker! Brags about blocking all ads so I guess if some have been slipping through the cracks on other adblockers this is the one to try.
- AdNauseam! This is another adblocker but in addition to blocking the ads it also feeds them false data which is neat! I'm not actually sure mine is feeding in any false data since I've got so many adblockers running they may get to it first, but it's still nice to do!
- DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials! This is another privacy tracker one, but it's got some extra features that I don't fully understand but sound good! It's also from DuckDuckGo, which is my go-to search engine when I'm on my laptop.
- Don't track me Google! This is specifically to keep Google from tracking you via links and suchlike. Technically Firefox now has the option to do this whenever you copy a link, but it's nice to automate that.
- Unpaywall! This isn't really an adblocker or anything of that nature but it feels like it's of a similar mind-set so I'm sticking it in this list. If you find a scholarly article but it's behind a paywall, this does its best to find a copy that is available legally for free. While I am not against piracy, this is a nice legal way to aquire articles, which can be helpful if you're looking into them for school or work or whatever.
All My Other Extensions:
- ColorZilla! Have you ever been on a webpage and wondered what a certain color's HEX number is? Look no further than this extension. It can also do other cool things but that's really the only one I use it for to be honest.
- Video Speed Controller! This is probably the one on this list I use the most, because I speed up almost every single thing I watch at least a little bit. While a lot of streaming sites have speed controllers built in now, they generally don't have as much control or specific speeds as this one does, so I highly recommend it!
- Tranquility Reader! Ever had to read an article but the layout of the website was super loud and distracting? Tranquility Reader can help with that! I don't use this one super often, especially now that I'm out of college and don't get these sorts of webpages assigned to me, but it can still be nice if you're ever having a day when your brain needs things as simple and bland-looking as possible.
- Emoji! It's an emoji keyboard. Not much else to say about it, but I do use it a surprising amount so it's nice to have if you're an emoji fiend like me. 😊
- Audio Downloader Prime! This is great for downloading any sort of audio on any site! I primarily use it to download audio files off of Patreons I'm subscribed to when I want to listen to podcasts offline, but you can use it for a ton of different things.
- Pacman! This is exactly what is says on the tin.
- Wayback Machine! That's right, the Wayback Machine has a broswer extension! I haven't actually actively used this much, but it's nice to know it's there if I want to use it.
- FireShot! This can take screenshots of entire webpages and turn them into PDFs, which can be super useful.
- Video DownloadHelper! Ever been on a site and wanted to download one of their videos but didn't want to go through a ton of steps? With this extension you can!
- Search by Image! This is another one that is really just what it says on the tin, what else can you say about a reverse image searcher?
- Worldwide Radio! Now you can listen to live radio stations all around the world right here in your browser! Apparently it has over 50,000 radio stations which is pretty fucking neat if you ask me.
- Firefox Multi-Account Containers! This is nice if you have multiple accounts on the same site, because then you can be logged into them at the same time in different tabs without having to worry about it accidentally logging you out of one or into the other. Plus it's color coded which is always fun.
- Custom Cursor! I couldn't find it in the Firefox Extensions thing so the link is to their official website, but this is really fun and something that's brought me a ton of joy! I've had a Lightning McQueen cursor that I've been using for a few years now that's a lot of fun and gets a lot of funny reactions whenever people see it for the first time. It's a great way to spice up your browsing experience!
- Return YoutTube Dislike! This is another one that's exactly what it says on the tin. I'm not 100% confident its numbers are always accurate but they seem to make sense most of the time.
- Simple Translate! If you're missing the translation options in Google, look no further than simple translate. Basically you can highlight any text and it'll translate it for you with the Google Translate degree of accuracy.
- Auto Tab Discard! This snoozes tabs when you don't use them for a while so it uses less of your memory and all that good stuff.
- Stylus! To be honest, I've never actually used this one but if you know CSS and stuff then this could be fun to mess around with. I really have it as more of an aspirational thing, like 'someday I'll be cool enough to understand how this works' lol.
- XKit Rewritten! Since tumblr is my go-to social media site this is pretty much required for me. I also have New XKit (W Edition) but I don't think it actually does much now that I don't do on XKit Rewritten so I'm not going to make a separate bullet point for that.
- YouTube Search Fixer! This is a must have if you regularly search on YouTube and hate the way it only gives you a few of the things you're actually looking for before jumping into random recommended stuff.
- Auto Cookie Optout! Yet another one that does what is says on the tin. If you're tired of opting out of cookies this will do so for you automatically on most sites.
- Tabby Cat! This is a cute little extension where every time you open a new tab there's a new cat with a new name and everything! The more tabs you open the more accessories you get for your cats and you can mix and match glasses and hats and items and it's all very cute.
